Why Yiyang for a Foreign-Invested Company
Yiyang sits in the Dongting Lake basin in northern Hunan, on the Zi River, and is connected to Changsha by high-speed rail and expressway. That matters for founders: you can run a Yiyang entity while reaching Changsha's airport, universities, hospitals and larger service providers within a reasonable trip.
The local economy is grounded in agriculture and processing rather than heavy export manufacturing. Yiyang is known across Hunan for rice, tea, bamboo and aquaculture, and for food processing, bamboo products and building materials. If your business touches agri-food sourcing, packaging, bamboo materials, or supply to regional construction, Yiyang is a credible base with lower office and warehouse costs than the provincial capital.
Hunan also has a manufacturing and equipment cluster around Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan, and Yiyang companies can buy from and sell into that corridor. Practical advantages for a foreign founder include:
- Lower rents for offices, warehouses and staff than Changsha.
- Access to agricultural and food-processing suppliers within the city.
- High-speed rail to Changsha and onward connections to major Chinese cities.
- A smaller business community where local relationships are easier to build.
The trade-off is a thinner pool of English-speaking staff and fewer international service firms than in tier-one cities.
